Big Questions

I'm starting a new blog segment today.  These will be quick and either thought provoking, challenging, or neither (I don't like to get too tied down by things I have said that I later realize were dumb).

As I said these blog posts will be short - but I do want you to honestly answer to yourself, or if you're really brave - in a comment.  so... HERE WE GO.

Question 1:  If you went to church today... were you more excited to go to it or get through it?

  1. I was more excited to go. And when you say "get through it" do you mean excited when it was over? I wish it could have went on longer! (Sue K.)

  2. I was excited to be there, even getting there early, although a certain daughter took my bass, so I was only singing backup. We have a great church, and it's exciting to see God moving. :-)

  3. Get through it.

The innovation of the protestant sermon centric church service, besides the obvious fault of moving away from historical and traditional Christianity, makes the average church service rather boring for those of us who grew up in Christianity.
It sounds harsh, but honestly when is the last time you actually learned something new from a Sunday morning?

  4. Interesting, but is the whole purpose of a Sunday morning learning?

  5. Get through it! Out door service on a day that the bank said 102 degrees layered with a fair amount of humidity? Makes it hard to concentrate on anything (no matter how cute the pastor is :) )! - A. Scrabeck

  6. Precisely. That's my whole point.
Modern Protestantism has centered the Sunday service around a sermon, this ought not be...
Its designed as if its primary function were instruction (albeit Charismatic worship has moved a little ways from this, whether for better or for worse I won't say).

The loss of eucharistic theology, core parts of formal liturgy, and true Ecclesiology has left us with a sermon, hymns, and a support group for our own personal Christianity.

Church has changed from the "Divine Liturgy" and "Love Feasts" to a 45 min lecture (my criticism of which has already been made).

  7. Go to it! I don't ever want to forget that it is a privalege to have the freedom to preach and hear the gospel - when it is outlawed in other countries. I believe the manifest presence of God / Holy Spirit during corporate worship can and does impact and change lives. And it is the presence of God we seek - not a mere sermon - or to be entertained with dynamic worship. We are there to meet with God corporately - and in doing so, we can encourage others, minister our gifts, receive the message God has for us - and in doing so hopefully grow from the experience. But maybe do without the 102 heat index!
